Antique Late 17th Century Oak Chest of Drawers C.1680

17th century
Sold 1 February 2026 · Founders Antiques
This “Antique Late 17th Century Oak Chest of Drawers C.1680” found a buyer.

It was listed by Founders Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A fine late 17th century chest of drawers constructed in solid oak, with characteristic geometric mouldings and a richly matured patina with a deep honey tone.

The carcass construction is entirely consistent with the period, featuring a single wide oak top, framed and panelled sides, and rough-sawn backboards of broad planks, all hand-worked with visible tool marks. The drawer fronts display bold rectilinear and lozenge-form applied mouldings, a defining feature of English oak furniture from the last quarter of the 17th century.

The chest stands on later bracket feet, likely added in the 18th century, as was common for chests of this type. These have aged and patinated alongside the carcass, providing stability while retaining a sympathetic appearance. The brass pear-drop handles and pierced escutcheons are also slightly later replacements, themselves of good age and entirely appropriate to the piece.

Presented in very good antique condition, with rich colour, natural surface wear and the warm patina expected of a chest over 300 years old. All drawers run smoothly, structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1680.

Seventeenth-century oak furniture, encompassing the Jacobean and William and Mary periods, is characterised by sturdy construction, utilitarian design, and rich patination developed over centuries.

Pieces from this era were predominantly crafted from solid English oak, frequently utilizing pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-split panels, and hand-cut dovetails for drawer construction.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks, hand-carved details, timber shrinkage, period-appropriate iron or brass hardware, and the presence of natural historical wear and oxidation.

Integrating period pieces into contemporary spaces creates a curated look; contrast the dark, tactile wood with minimalist surroundings, neutral walls, or clean-lined modern upholstery.

Maintain stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoid direct sunlight to prevent timber drying, and occasionally treat the wood with traditional beeswax to nourish the surface.
