1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 6ft 1in x 5ft 9in (186 x 175cm).

Antique Uzbek Lakai tribe silk embroidered suzani cover on a red wool ground.

Circa 1920.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are often embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This small suzani embroidery is in silk on a red wool ground, it would have been used as a cover or hanging inside the family yurt. The suzani is backed with Russian printed cotton cloth.

The condition is excellent with only very slight signs of use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Lakai suzani is a traditional hand-embroidered textile panel crafted by the nomadic Lakai people of Uzbekistan. These textiles are known for their bold graphic compositions, circular motifs, and distinctive needlework patterns.

Suzanis are typically constructed using silk or cotton threads stitched onto a woven foundation fabric made of wool, linen, or cotton. Dyes historically derived from natural botanical and mineral sources provided the ground colours.

Authentic early 20th-century Lakai embroidery features continuous chain stitching, asymmetric solar medallions, and vibrant contrasting thread palettes. Slight irregularities in the hand-worked stitching and natural dye variation further indicate genuine age.

A suzani can be mounted on a fabric frame or draped over a mounting rod as a wall accent to introduce pattern and warmth. It can also be placed across the foot of a bed or draped over upholstered seating.

Antique textiles should be kept away from direct sunlight to avoid fibre degradation and colour loss. Gentle surface dust removal using a low-suction vacuum through a soft mesh screen is recommended, alongside professional textile conservation for deeper cleaning.
