Vintage Uzbek Suzani, Probably Lakai Tribe, Silk on Cotton, Circa 1920/30.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 9ft 0in x 7ft 7in (275 x 230cm).

Vintage Uzbek suzani, silk on a dark pink cotton ground.

Circa 1920/30.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are often embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This example is probably embroidered by the Lakai tribe and it features large multi coloured solar discs, the use of yellow and green is quite striking against the dark pink ground.

The condition is excellent with only very slight wear, the suzani has been re-backed in Russian cotton.

The suzani is ready for display or it could be used as a bed cover.

Ref: T-0311.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A suzani is a decorative hand-embroidered textile originating from Central Asian nations, historically crafted by brides and their families as part of a dowry.

Traditional suzanis feature silk threads embroidered onto narrow woven cotton or silk foundation fabric strips, which are subsequently stitched together to form a larger textile.

Authentic vintage pieces exhibit hand-stitched seams joining foundation panels, natural dye tonal variations, precise chain or couching stitches, and traditional motifs such as solar discs or floral medallions.

These textiles can be displayed as large-scale wall hangings, draped over the foot of a bed, or folded as a statement throw on upholstered seating to introduce colour and pattern.

Embroidered textiles should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, gently vacuumed through a nylon mesh screen, and cleaned only by a professional textile restorer.
