Talish Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

Rugs with diagonal stripes are often attributed to Gendje but closer inspection shows this to be quite finely knotted and along with the proportions places it as a Talish rug. The diagonals filled with small boteh create depth as they slip under the border. The main border is strong and has some really lovely colour with a noticeable abrash in the blue and is bordered itself by two reciprocal minor borders. This is a high quality rug in every respect with soft wool and a well articulated design due to it’s high knot density.

Excellent condition with just a little loss to one end.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Talish rugs are hand-knotted textiles originating from the Talysh region in the southeastern Caucasus. They are typically woven in long, narrow runner proportions and feature distinctive geometric compositions, such as plain central fields or repeating diagonal bar patterns.

Traditional Talish rugs are constructed using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation. Dyes were historically derived from natural plant and mineral sources, creating rich shades of indigo blue, madder red, ivory, and forest green.

Authentic pieces generally display a high length-to-width ratio, wool foundation warps and wefts, symmetric knotting, and characteristic design features including wide main borders with star-in-octagon or rosette motifs alongside diagonal stripe field structures.

A Caucasian runner rug functions well in entryways, long corridors, or beside a bed, providing structure and colour. Placing a geometric tribal rug alongside neutral contemporary furniture creates a balanced contrast between modern minimalism and traditional textile craft.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only attachment without a rotary brush to prevent fiber damage. Rotate the rug annually to balance wear and light exposure, and use a high-quality rug pad beneath it to prevent slipping and reduce friction.
