Antique Turkmen Chuval, Kizyl Ayak Tribe, Turkmenistan, Central Asia.

19th century
Sold 9 October 2025 · Brian MacDonald Antique Rugs & Carpets
This “Antique Turkmen Chuval, Kizyl Ayak Tribe, Turkmenistan, Central Asia” found a buyer.

It was listed by Brian MacDonald Antique Rugs & Carpets. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

Recently acquired from a private collection, this rare and powerful Turkmen 'chuval' - storage bag-face - was most likely made by the Kizyl Ayak tribe during the early to mid 19th century.

What is particularly rare is the use of the 'dyrnak' gul, used as a minor gul here whereas amongst the Yomut Turkmen, it would have been used as a main gul or crest. At a guess, I'd say with this piece, we have a Yomut woman married into the dominant Kizyl Ayak tribe and able to use her gul as a minor ornament!

The magnificent madder-red field is stunning and the chuval is complete and in excellent condition.

Size: 1.37m x 0.92m (4' 6" x 3' 0").

A chuval is a large, face-woven bag traditionally used by nomadic Turkmen tribes in Central Asia for household storage inside tents.

Authentic pieces feature hand-spun sheeps wool foundation and pile, frequently dyed using natural madder roots for rich red hues alongside indigo and yellow.

Authenticity is determined by examine natural colour variations in the wool, traditional tribal gul motifs, asymmetrical knotting, and hand-finished sides and borders.

Such pieces function as striking wall hangings or accent floor coverings, adding texture and historical depth to modern or traditional minimalist spaces.

Preservation requires gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, keeping the item out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and periodic professional textile cleaning.
