A stunning large 19th century marine oil painting by French artist, Henri Cassinelli, circa 1870.

Henri Cassinelli (1833-1927) was the son of an art dealer in Le Havre. Henri started by painting harbour scenes in his home town, and soon also painted land and seascapes in nearly Honfleur. He studied with Jean-Baptiste Durand Brager in Paris and also became close to Eugène Boudin whose paintings sell for hundreds of thousands of pounds... Boudin and Cassinelli often worked together on the Normandy coast, and even collaborated and co signed a number of paintings. One of them is in the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, another in the Boudin museum in Honfleur.

This large and very well executed and atmospheric scene of a fishing vessel in stormy seas has elements and clear inspiration from a Boudin painting. Signed lower right by Cassinelli.

Overall size including frame: 41 x 32 inches

This superb painting has been professionally cleaned, conserved and original frame restored to the highest of standards.
