The piece is constructed from warm brown burr walnut veneer with a serpentine marble top, twin central doors with oval mirrored inserts, and solid domed side end doors. Detailed carvings adorn the corbels and frames, complemented by turned elements on the uprights, brass or metal castors at the base, and a small pale handle on the right side door. The interior includes one central shelf, while the marble top sits in good condition. Practical for placement in a dining room, living room or hallway, this credenza serves as a functional storage cabinet and display surface. It measures 96 cm high, 183 cm wide and 52 cm deep, providing substantial capacity for tableware, linens or decorative items within a traditional home interior.

FAQs

A mid-19th century credenza is a low, wide storage cabinet characterized by fine timber veneers, often featuring a shaped marble surface and mirrored panel doors typical of Victorian and Rococo Revival design.

Cabinetmakers of this era frequently paired dense native and imported hardwoods, such as burr walnut or mahogany, with polished marble slabs, mirror glass, and hand-carved decorative mouldings.

Authentic pieces generally display period construction hallmarks, including hand-cut dovetail joints, thick cut timber veneers, original castors, hand-silvered glass, and authentic wear to the underside of the marble top.

Position the piece as a focal point in a hallway, dining room, or living space, balancing its elaborate woodwork with simplified contemporary art, minimal table lamps, or neutral wall colours.

Keep the wood veneer hydrated using natural beeswax polish applied along the grain, avoiding silicone sprays. Clean the marble surface with pH-neutral solutions to prevent etching, and wipe up spills immediately.
