Composition & Technique

About the Artist – Circle of Mary Beale
Though unsigned, the work is attributed to the Circle of Mary Beale, one of 17th-century England’s most respected portraitists and among the very few women to sustain a professional career at the time. Beale was known for her warmth of expression, sensitive colouring, and her ability to reveal personality with subtlety.
Works by her circle often display similar hallmarks—refined figure modelling, softly luminous palettes, and an intimacy unusual for the period. This portrait exemplifies those qualities, likely painted by an artist trained in her studio or deeply influenced by her methods.
