Patented in 1813 by Charles Mason, ironstone china was developed as a durable, dense ceramic alternative to porcelain, heavily influenced by Chinese Imari and Japanese export styles.

Ironstone is a type of heavy earthenware fired at high temperatures, typically featuring refined clay mixed with slag, feldspar, and china stone, then hand-finished with enamel colours and gilding.

Authenticity is determined by examining the impressed or printed factory backstamps, the weight and thickness of the ceramic body, the crazing patterns in the glaze, and the depth of the hand-applied enamels.

These decorative plates can be mounted on walls as textural art displays, arranged on open shelving, or used as statement centrepieces on dining tables to introduce historical character.

Antique ironstone should be washed by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent; avoid dishwashers, harsh chemicals, and abrasive sponges to protect the delicate hand-painted gilding and surface glazes.
