FAQs

Still life painting gained prominence during the Dutch Golden Age, focusing on inanimate objects such as household items, food, and flowers to symbolise the transience of life or to demonstrate the artists technical skill.

Traditional oil paintings are created using pigment suspended in a drying oil, typically applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, wood panels, or millboard, often sealed with a protective varnish layer.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the canvas weave, craquelure patterns in the oil paint, stretcher frame construction, artist signatures, and underlying support materials under ultraviolet light.

An antique oil painting adds depth and character to contemporary spaces when hung against a textured neutral wall, pairing historical weight with clean-lined modern furniture.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, keeping the canvas away from direct sunlight, and cleaning dust gently with a soft, dry brush without using liquid solvents.
