Effect of Light on Water, the Flooded River Seine, Ca 1910, Impressionist Oil on Panel

1900 - 1920
Description

A truly Impressionist gem, which beautifully renders the effect of light on water with broad, confident brushstrokes, while integrating the colour and texture the support - a wooden panel - into the composition. The result is a work of art that on some level is almost abstract, and yet tells you everything about the scene depicted. Represented is the bank of river, undoubtedly the Seine, deeply flooded, trees emerging from the water, on a winter's day. Clearly painted en plein air, I believe the picture may actually be be showing the Seine in Paris, during the Great Flood of 1910.

The artist who painted this work is French Henry Brémond (1875-1944). Brémond had studied with Jean-Léon Gérôme , Henri Pinta and Émile Jourdan. He exhibited at the Salon from 1894, where he obtained a 3rd class medal in 1902 and a second medal in 1903. Works by the artist are conserved in the collections of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA) and those of the Comédie Francaise.

Measuring 16 x 19 cm, our oil on panel is dedicated indistinctly by Brémond: "A mon cher ami Ja..... " and signed at the lower right. The overall framed size including a beautiful lacquered frame are 24 x 28 cm.
