Description

Antique Yomut Turkmen Ensi with double tree elem design.

Circa 1880.

Ensi are considered to be traditional ceremonial door hangings for the entrance to the tribal yurt. They make excellent small floor rugs.

A very good Yomut Turkmen ensi (Yurt door hanging). This example has a soft brownish red colour and two beautifully drawn elem (base) panels. The upper elem is of large stylised trees and the lower panel is trees on a abrashed indigo blue ground that really glows.

Good condition with even wear and medium pile, the tassels at both ends would appear to be later additions.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Ensi is a specific genre of rug hand-woven by nomadic Turkmen tribes, traditionally crafted to serve as a decorative hanging at the entrance of a yurt (tent). The design typically incorporates a cruciform or four-panel layout known as a hatchli, symbolic of dividing the inner sanctuary from the outer world.

Authentic nineteenth-century Turkmen Ensi rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced sheeps wool for both the pile and the warp/weft foundation. The deep aubergine, liver-brown, navy, and terracotta shades are derived from traditional natural plant and insect dyes.

Authentic Yomut Ensis feature a characteristic red-brown or dark mahogany field with a structured four-part central grid. They are distinguished by fine knotting, serrated geometric motifs, and broad bottom skirts (elems) often depicting stylised tree or chevron patterns.

These textiles are frequently layered over natural fibre floorings such as sisal or jute to add geometric structure and rich earth tones to a room. They also function well alongside dark timber furniture, leather seating, or mounted directly onto walls as acoustic textile artwork.

Vacuum gently using suction only without a rotating beater bar to prevent fiber damage. Professional hand-washing by a specialist rug restorer is recommended, along with using a high-quality rug underlay to protect the foundation from uneven wear.
