Description

Rugs of the Bahluli 'Baluch' tribe are recognised by their symmetric-knotting whereas most other tribes in the 'Baluch' tradition, are asymmetrically-knotted.

This rug, made during the last quarter of the nineteenth century by the Bahluli tribe in the region of Qaienat, Khorassan province, eastern Persia, comprises a field of stylised leaves. The main border has a powerful rendition of tribal motifs and the rug is complete with chevron skirts in knotted-pile as opposed to flat-weave technique. Particularly attractive, are the highlights of a natural, light-blue throughout.

The rug is in very good overall condition, albeit with some areas of corroded brown dye, due to the iron mordant effect.

Size: 1.55m x 0.89m (5' 1" x 3' 0").

Antique Baluch rugs are hand-knotted textiles traditionally woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes inhabiting the borderlands of Persia, Afghanistan, and Balochistan, characterised by rich dark colour palettes and geometric motifs.

These rugs are typically constructed with wool piles hand-knotted onto wool or occasionally cotton warp and weft foundations, utilizing natural dyes derived from local plants, roots, and minerals.

Authentic pieces often feature characteristic dark saturated tones like deep indigo and madder red, asymmetrical or symmetrical Persian knots, goat hair or wool selvedges, and distinctive nomadic geometric patterns.

An antique tribal rug adds texture, warmth, and historical depth to contemporary spaces, working effectively as a focal point in minimalist settings or layered over larger neutral flooring.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without the beater bar, keeping the rug out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, and professional periodic cleaning by a specialist in antique textiles.
