This Victorian solid ash chest of drawers dates from 1890 and is redecorated by hand in a pale Swedish grey finish. The piece has a rectangular top with moulded fore-edges, a two-over-two drawer layout including two short top drawers and three long drawers below, and small keyhole escutcheons set into the drawer fronts. Additional details include Aesthetic Movement period brass drop handles and a simple base supported by shaped bracket feet. The chest measures 83 cm high, 107 cm wide, and 52 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this chest of drawers suits placement in a bedroom or dressing room for everyday storage, or serves as a functional surface in a hallway or landing. The neutral grey paint finish and traditional proportions allow the piece to integrate smoothly into English Country House or transitional interior schemes, providing practical drawer space while maintaining a clean, understated aesthetic.

FAQs

Victorian painted furniture often features sturdy solid wood construction, such as ash or pine, updated with painted finishes that draw inspiration from Nordic or Continental colour palettes to lighten heavy timber silhouettes.

Chests of drawers from this period were primarily crafted from durable hardwoods like ash, oak, and mahogany, or softwoods like pine, paired with cast brass hardware and keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, solid timber back panels, period-correct brass fittings, and natural wear along drawer runners.

Muted grey painted timber pairs well with neutral linen textiles, contemporary framed artwork, and modern ceramic accessories to balance historical charm with refined modern living.

Clean painted wooden surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, keeping the furniture away from direct heat sources and moisture to prevent paint flaking or timber movement.
