We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Mid-century oil portraiture typically reflects modernist influences focusing on character study, expressive brushwork, and muted colour palettes distinct from strict academic realism.

These pieces generally utilise artist-grade oil paints applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, often secured to wooden stretcher frames with visible ageing on the reverse.

Verification involves examining the canvas weave, types of nails or staples used, oxidisation of the oil paint, stretcher bar construction, and any artist signatures or dates inscribed on the canvas.

Hanging an oil portrait against a boldly painted or panelled wall introduces historical depth and a focal point that contrasts effectively with streamlined modern furnishings.

Preservation requires keeping the canvas away from direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperatures, and dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth without using liquids.
