Oil on Canvas Japanese Boy

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautifully framed oil portrait of a young child, dated 1927. The little sitter, with dark eyes and gently flushed cheeks, is captured in a moment of quiet composure. His expression is tender and introspective, framed by a richly carved surround with a distressed white finish that enhances the painting’s antique charm. Affixed to the reverse is a handwritten Japanese label which reads according to AI.

English Translation:

Rapid Current (likely the title of the artwork)

February 1927 (Showa 2)

March 5th

Gazen-ga (possibly the artist’s name or studio; could be interpreted as “Gazen Painting” or “Gazen Art”)

This is a wonderful piece, with only minor age-related imperfections consistent with its near-century of life. It remains a striking and characterful work that would sit beautifully on any wall.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Portraiture from this era often combines traditional figurative representation with modern expressive brushwork, capturing the character and presence of the subject through textured paint application.

Oil portrait paintings are executed using oil-based pigments applied onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, typically presented in carved wooden or gesso frames.

Authentic pieces display age-appropriate surface craquelure, natural toning of the varnish layers, hand-stretched canvas construction, and subtle wear along the reverse wooden stretcher.

A framed portrait functions well positioned above a sideboard, leaned on a mantelpiece alongside contemporary ceramics, or integrated into a curated gallery wall.

Canvas artwork should be kept away from direct sunlight and moisture fluctuations, with the frame and paint surface dusted lightly using a soft, dry brush.
