Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, plaster casts of ancient Greek and Roman figures were produced as academic study aids and Grand Tour souvenirs. Portrayals of classical authors, philosophers, and poets such as Homer were traditional additions to private libraries, academies, and estate collections.

These sculptures were created by pouring liquid plaster of Paris into multi-piece piece-moulds taken directly from ancient marble or bronze works. Once cured, visible mold seams were hand-chiselled away, and surfaces were often finished with a wax or sealant wash to reduce porosity.

Authentic 19th-century casts display age-appropriate surface patination, subtle seam lines from historical casting techniques, and localized wear near base edges. They possess greater weight than modern resin reproductions and exhibit a matte, non-synthetic surface texture.

A plaster bust serves as a prominent focal point when set upon a dark wood sideboard, mantelpiece, or within open shelving. The pale plaster creates strong visual contrast against dark-painted walls, timber panelling, or minimalist contemporary furniture.

Plaster is highly porous and vulnerable to water damage, requiring dry cleaning methods using a soft camel-hair brush or vacuum cleaner fitted with a soft brush attachment. Liquid cleaners and damp wiping should be avoided as moisture can dissolve surface details or cause staining.
