About Thomas Sidney Cooper (1803–1902)
Thomas Sidney Cooper was one of Britain’s foremost animal painters. Born in Canterbury, he overcame poverty to become a Royal Academician and a household name in Victorian art. Nicknamed “Cow Cooper,” he was celebrated for his sensitive, lifelike portrayals of cattle and sheep.
After early career challenges, Cooper honed his technique during his time in Brussels, influenced by his friendship with Eugčne Verboeckhoven. Returning to England, he began a prolific exhibiting career with the Royal Academy, attracting patrons including Queen Victoria and forming friendships with figures like J.M.W. Turner and Charles Dickens. His legacy remains central to 19th-century English landscape and animal painting.
