Pair of 19th Century French Burr Elm Commodes

19th century
Description

A Pair of 19th Century French Burr Elm Commodes.

These beautiful commodes have a very contemporary look due to the use of relatively pale woods for most of their veneered construction. The contrast between pale elm and panels of burr elm of exceptional figure give them a striking look. The tops of the commodes have beautiful bookmatched panels of burr elm, other panels of the same wood are set in to the sides of each commode and the drawer fronts. The architectural columns either side of the drawer fronts are ebonised with ormolu capitals and bases bringing another interesting contrast to the design.

A very interesting pair of commodes that will work in traditional and contemporary settings.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French commode is a low cabinet or chest of drawers designed for storage, which evolved through the 18th and 19th centuries. Pieces finished in burr elm feature veneer cut from tree burls, creating complex, natural swirl grain patterns across the exterior surfaces.

19th-century French commodes feature timber carcases veneered with fine woods such as burr elm, mahogany, or walnut. Internal drawer linings are frequently made of oak or pine, while exterior details often incorporate brass escutcheons and ebonised architectural columns.

Authentic 19th-century commodes display hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, period-appropriate iron locks with brass escutcheons, and visible hand-planing marks on rear panels and interior surfaces. Wood shrinkage lines along the timber side panels also indicate genuine age.

A pair of commodes can be placed symmetrically flanking a grand fireplace, positioned in a wide hallway, or used as large bedside tables in a master bedroom suite. The natural timber figuring provides texture and visual weight alongside contemporary wall paint shades and neutral upholstery.

Keep burr elm furniture away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer lifting. Regular dusting with a clean microfiber cloth and periodic application of natural beeswax polish maintains the wood moisture balance and surface gloss.
