Description

This finely worked Bokhara suzani from Uzbekistan dates to the mid-19th century. However, the design, and in particular the spandrels, reveal the influence of 17th and 18th century Indian Moghul art. As we know, the oasis khanates of Uzbekistan lay on the silk road. Artists and craftsmen of all types were constantly exposed to myriad influences which is so clearly manifested here in this elegant piece. The architectural format and its height also suggests that it was made to cover an entrance or doorway, another device very much associated with Indian decoration. Although the central plain panel has evidently been repaired, the embroidery is in excellent original condition. Lined in a grey cotton, the original ikat trimmings around the edges are intact.
