FAQs

The French Empire style is characterised by neoclassical symmetry, architectural columns, symmetrical proportions, and classical bronze or brass mounts influenced by ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian designs.

These pieces were typically constructed using a sturdy secondary wood framework, veneered with rich hardwoods such as walnut or mahogany, and accented with cast gilt-bronze or brass hardware.

Authenticity is identified through traditional joinery techniques such as hand-cut dovetails, secondary timbers appropriate to the region, hand-cast metal hardware, and natural timber oxidisation consistent with age.

Pair the classical lines of the commode with neutral contemporary walls and minimalist modern lighting to highlight its architectural form and rich wooden tones without overwhelming the space.

Maintain walnut furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber.
