This French Country commode dates from around 1930 and follows an 18th-century design. The piece is constructed from walnut with a warm brown timber finish and stands upon short, shaped feet. Three full-width drawers provide storage, accented with ornate cast brass drop handles and decorative escutcheons. The structure incorporates a bow front, fielded panelled sides, and a scalloped lower apron. Signs of age include traces of old woodworm. The chest measures 120 cm wide by 54.5 cm deep by 81 cm high. This proportion suits a bedroom as a storage unit, a hallway for surface display, or a living room placed against a wall to hold lamps and decorative objects.

FAQs

A French country commode is a low cabinet fitted with drawers, originating in 18th-century France and adapted for regional homes. These pieces feature functional storage, native hard woods like walnut, and elegant curved aprons or panels.

French country commodes are traditionally constructed from solid native woods such as walnut, oak, and fruitwood. Hardware typically includes cast brass or bronze backplates, drop handles, and decorative keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic vintage pieces feature hand-cut or early machine dovetail drawer joints, solid wood drawer linings, and cast metal fitments. Look for regional characteristics such as curved lower aprons, panelled side sections, and natural surface patination.

Place the commode against a neutral backdrop to highlight the warm timber tones. Balance its visual weight by placing contemporary ceramics or a minimalist table lamp on top, suspended beneath a framed mirror or large-scale artwork.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth. Apply a clear, natural beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the wood grain, and keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading.
