We are excited to offer this rare pair of antique Karaja rugs, circa 1910 and both in fabulous condition. Very rare for pairs of antique rugs to be found still together, as often they can get separated or one rug gets too worn or damaged. Woven over 100 plus years ago, the weavers used a very deep blue for the background wool, with warm brick reds for the border and rare green dyes for the eight-pointed star motifs, either side of the natural wool sun-burst medallion in the centre.
Woven with great precision and symmetry, the weavers had great skill to produce an almost identical pair. We can see on the rug on the right, this weaver ran out of the deeper blue for the minor border and used a lighter pale blue. This is really the beautiful charm and characteristics of an antique rug, and none are ever perfect, yet tell a story and add interest to a room, as well as warmth and vivid design.
Both rugs are in extraordinary good pile, purchased from a private collector, they admired
... and used them for most of their life. Supplied with our anti-slip underlay included in the price, this aids the rugs and stops them moving around on any floor type. Each rug measures 196 x 144 cm / 6''5'' x 4''9''.
