John Miers Unusual Silhouette with Motto

18th century
Description

But wisdom is the gray hair unto men, and an unspotted life is old age – Wisdom of Solomon 4:9

By choosing this Biblical verse to be inscribed around the verre églomisé mount on this silhouette suggests that the sitter may have died young having led an exemplary life. The profile itself may have been painted from memory or a copy of an earlier profile may have been painted post-mortem with the inscription added to honour the sitter.

The silhouette shows a young gentleman in a bound pigtail wig wearing a frilled chemise and buttoned-up coat. Sadly his name has been lost to history.

Painted on plaster, the silhouette resides in the original papier-mâché frame with an inner pearwood border and is backed with the artist’s complete trade label no. 11 in use from 1791. Apart from a little light dust (exaggerated by the camera) both silhouette and frame are in fine condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silhouette portraits were profile likenesses created in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, rendered in solid black onto plaster, paper, or glass as a popular form of portraiture prior to photography.

Artists typically painted profiles using black ink or soot on plaster, card, or ivory, often housed behind glass within ebonised wooden frames or papier-mache mounts with brass fittings.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct framing materials such as ebonised fruitwood or papier-mache, brass acorn hangers, reverse-gilded glass surrounds known as verre eglomise, and fine hair detail.

These miniature artworks style effectively as part of a layered gallery wall, suspended in a narrow wall niche, or placed alongside period ceramics on a mantelpiece or bookshelf.

Display silhouettes away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to protect paper and paint media, and gently clean the outer glass using a soft dry cloth.
