Antique Uzbek Tashkent 'Palak' Suzani, Fully Embroidered, Central Star, Circa 1890.

19th century
Description

Size: 8ft 4in x 6ft 11in (255 x 210cm).

Antique Uzbek Tashkent 'palak' suzani, superb colour and condition.

Circa 1890.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This is an excellent sample of an old Tashkent suzani called palak. This was the only kind of suzani where solar and astral motifs dominate over vegetative ones. According to ethnographical research data, big circles of the traditional palak pattern represent the moon and stars that were believed to provide good health and enhance female reproductive ability. Note the large central star. The whole surface of the piece is entirely embroidered in silk 'basma' couching stitch.

The condition is excellent with only very slight wear and no repairs, there are a few spots of old staining and very slight finger tip size damage in a corner where it has been wall hung.

The suzani is ready for display.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Palak suzani is a specific style of hand-embroidered textile originating from the Tashkent region of Uzbekistan, characterized by large red circular medallions and celestial motifs that symbolize the sky or heavens.

Traditional suzanis are crafted using silk thread hand-embroidered onto narrow strips of woven cotton ground fabric, which are stitched together before embroidery begins and feature techniques such as chain stitch and couching.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature naturally dyed silk threads with subtle colour shifts, hand-spun cotton foundation panels with irregular hand-stitching, and traditional motif arrangements specific to distinct Central Asian regions.

These textiles are frequently mounted on stretched canvas or hung as focal wall art, draped over the foot of a bed, or layered across seating to introduce saturated colour and tactile pattern.

To preserve delicate silk embroidery, keep the textile out of direct sunlight, avoid hanging it under heavy tension without proper supportive backing, and consult a professional textile conservator for specialized cleaning.
