James H Hulse Watercolour C1850

19th century
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A mid 19thC watercolour painting by James H Hulse (active c1840-1851). This artist is know for landscapes of large English country houses but this landscape ( along with the pair separately listed) is more likely of a continental landscape scene while travelling, possibly Germany, Eastern France or Switzerland. The painting is signed bottom left. The painting depicts a countryside scene of a bridge over a gorge, with a donkey being ridden, against a stunning backdrop of high snowy mountains and a bright wide sky. The whole effect is inspiring, yet simple and gentle. The painting is nicely frame in a silvery gold frame, behind glass. Excellent condition and colour.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-19th century British landscape watercolours developed during the Victorian era, focusing on naturalistic topographies, atmospheric light, and picturesque views inspired by Romanticism.

Artists utilised transparent watercolour washes on heavy cotton rag paper, typically presented with acid-free card mounts inside carved or leaf-gilded wooden frames.

Authentic works often exhibit minor age-related paper tone, delicate layering of washes, historical artist signatures or inscriptions, and original period mounting or framing hardware.

Hang classic landscape art above contemporary sideboards or incorporate it into an eclectic gallery wall to add historical depth and tone to modern living spaces.

Display watercolours away from direct sunlight and damp environments, using UV-filtering glass and acid-free backing materials to prevent pigment fading and foxing.
