Muriel was born in the Yorkshire Dales in 1910. She won a scholarship to Armstong College of Art: Newcastle when she was only 14. Her work is fluid, emotive and has a spontaneity that is instinctive, responding to the landscape and people around her. Influenced by the dynamic new art of the 1920’s and 30’s she showed a passion for form and colour. She married Fred Lawson in 1933, an artist 22 years her senior, and of a different era, but of the same mind. They were equals, with many like-minded friends. Muriel and Fred lived at Castle Bolton in The Yorkshire Dales all their married life.

Date of Manufacture

William Greenwood Fine Art has dated this Landscape Watercolour Painting to the 1930s.

This original watercolour painting by Muriel Metcalfe dates from 1930 and belongs to the Modern British period. Executed on paper using watercolour pigment, the composition employs a palette of muted green, blue, brown and white tones to depict a pastoral scene with mature trees, wooden fencing, grazing cattle, rolling pastures and a cloudy sky. The artwork bears the artist signature in the lower left corner and measures 27 cm by 36 cm for the visible sheet, with an overall framed size of 44 cm by 52 cm. Suitable for placement above a sideboard in an English country house interior, the painting brings traditional charm and rural scenery into a home setting. The fluid and instinctive application of pigment creates a dynamic representation of the Yorkshire Dales landscape. The physical item is supplied framed and in ready-to-hang condition, presenting an authentic example of the artist early work from the Castle Bolton Estate period.

British landscape watercolour art of the 20th century focuses on depicting natural light, weather, and rural scenes through expressive brushwork and transparent pigment washes.

Artists traditionally apply water-soluble pigments onto heavy cotton rag paper using soft natural hair brushes, such as sable or squirrel.

Authentic watercolours feature visible brush strokes, paper texture, subtle tonal gradations without mechanical print dots, and an original artist signature.

A landscape watercolour painting can be framed with an acid-free mount and positioned on a gallery wall or rested on a mantlepiece to bring natural tones into a room.

Watercolours should be framed under UV-filtering glass with archival backing materials and displayed away from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent fading.
