An Early North West Persian Carpet 424x213cm

19th century
Description

An early North West Persian carpet with a beautifully delicate, all over design woven in pale organic colours on soft madder ground flanked by beautiful mid blue borders. It is unclear exactly where these were woven, some scholars suggesting Joshlaghan while others suggest Mahal. The design is certainly found on many later Mahal carpets. Though complete, the carpet has numerous small repairs and have areas of light tinting, not too bad considering this one is nearly 200 years old. It remains a solid carpet suitable for light floor use.

An early North West Persian carpet originating from around 1850 in a Persian style, made of wool and cotton with a terracotta red and navy blue colour scheme. The piece showcases a delicate all-over repeating geometric floral lattice field on a soft madder ground, enclosed by a wide navy blue patterned border with multi-band elements and geometric scrolls. Numerous small repairs and areas of light tinting appear across the surface, reflecting an age of nearly two hundred years. The carpet measures 424 cm high, 213 cm wide, and 0.5 cm deep. Suitable for light floor use within an English Country House setting, the carpet provides a solid foundation for living rooms, studies, or reception spaces. The traditional motifs and subdued organic tones coordinate with period interiors, functioning as a practical floor covering that bridges historical design with modern home curation.

FAQs

North West Persian carpets are recognised for their durable hand-knotted construction, geometric floral patterns, and deep vegetable-dyed colour palettes originating from weaving centres such as Heriz, Bakshaish, and Tabriz.

These carpets are crafted using hand-spun sheep wool for the pile, hand-knotted onto a sturdy cotton or wool foundation consisting of warp and weft threads.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible hand-tied knot structures on the underside, subtle colour variations known as abrash from natural dye batches, and a flexible wool structure without synthetic backings.

A large Persian carpet serves as an anchoring foundation in a living room or dining space, bringing texture, warm colour, and historical contrast when paired with contemporary or classical furnishings.

Maintain the carpet by vacuuming regularly with a suction-only nozzle, rotating the piece annually to equalize wear, and employing professional specialist rug cleaners for deep treatment.
