Description

Oil on panel by the French artist Charles Betremieux (1919 - 1997) who was a creative artist. The still life shows a dead pheasant and is signed by the artist.

Betremieux was born in 1919 and was predominantly inspired by the 1930s. He studied at the Ecole Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes with Raymond Debieve where their work was quickly noticed and rewarded:

The period of the 1930s is characterised by the clashing of many political ideologies, including Marxist Socialism, Capitalist Democracy, and the Totalitarianism of both Communism and Fascism. This oil painting by French artist Charles Betremieux depicts a suspended pheasant in an expressionist style. The still life work uses oil paint on canvas, presenting a dark brown subject against a textured background of blue, grey, and off-white tones. Impasto brushwork gives the surface a tactile quality, showing thick strokes of paint and visible signature marks by the artist in the lower corner. The piece measures 78 cm high, 56.5 cm deep, and 0.5 cm wide in practical terms. Suitable for interior placement in a highland hunting lodge style interior, the artwork hangs effectively above the mantel as a focal point. The muted terracotta and earthy colours coordinate with traditional rustic decor, bringing a mid-century artistic presence to living spaces or studies. The composition captures a dead pheasant hanging downwards, creating a sombre mood typical of twentieth-century still life traditions.

Game still life paintings gained prominent popularity in 17th-century Europe, particularly within Dutch and French traditions. These works documented hunting harvests and traditional sporting pursuits, evolving over centuries into artistic studies of texture, form, and light.

Traditional oil paintings are executed using ground mineral pigments bound in linseed or walnut oil, applied onto stretched linen canvas, hemp, or wooden panels. Ground preparation coats typically consisted of gesso or lead-based primers.

Authentic period oil paintings exhibit natural age craquelure across the paint film, authentic surface oxidisation, and era-appropriate canvas tensioning or panel construction. Signatures, artists marks, and original stretcher hardware also assist in verification.

A game still life painting can be hung above a mantelpiece or sideboard to create a focal point in traditional or eclectic spaces. Pairing the artwork with dark timber furniture, brass accents, and neutral walls highlights the rich tones of the oil paint.

Preserve oil paintings by hanging them away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity. Dust gently with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush, and consult a professional restorer for varnish removal or structural stabilization.
