This eighteenth-century Louis XVI Neoclassical commode is constructed from warm brown walnut with a white and grey veined marble top. The rectangular cabinet stands on four tapered square legs with linear inlay running down each corner post and leg. Two long drawers occupy the front, each decorated with geometric marquetry inlay borders and fitted with cast brass drop ring handles held by circular backplates, alongside central brass keyhole escutcheons with ornate floral mounts. The sides of the case display matching panelled inlay framed by dark timber borders, while the moulded top overhangs the body slightly to frame the polished marble slab. Measuring 84 cm high by 87 cm wide and 48 cm deep, the commode provides a compact surface and storage footprint for practical use. Placed in a living room, hallway, or bedroom today, the chest functions well as a decorative side table, a display surface for lamps and ornaments, or an accent piece against a plain wall. The warm timber tones and contrasting pale stone top coordinate readily with traditional or transitional interior schemes. The visible grain variations in the wood, along with the detailed cast brass hardware, demonstrate the period craftsmanship of the design. The surface of the marble offers a durable, wipe-clean plane suitable for daily placement of decorative objects, keys, or small household items.

Originating in late 18th-century France under the Louis XVI reign, Neoclassical commodes shifted away from Rococo curves toward straight geometric lines, tapered legs, symmetrical marquetry inlay, and heavy marble tops.

Cabinetmakers used dense hardwoods such as walnut, oak, and kingwood for construction, accented with contrasting wood marquetry, cast brass or bronze ormolu mounts, and thick, hand-cut veined marble slabs.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-sawn wood construction, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, unfinished or rough-cut undersides on marble tops, and natural oxidisation on brass hardware.

Place the piece as a focal point against a plain wall, topped with clean-lined ceramic lamps or contemporary artwork to contrast the geometric marquetry and marble surface.

Dust wood components regularly with a microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly. Clean marble tops using pH-neutral soap and water, avoiding acidic solutions that etch natural stone.
