FAQs

During the Victorian era, advancements in industrial manufacturing allowed for the mass production of metal beds. These iron and brass bedsteads were praised for their hygienic qualities compared to wooden beds, which were prone to harbouring pests.

These beds are typically constructed from cast and wrought iron, often featuring tubular iron frames, decorative brass accents, and structural dovetail joints or wedge-lock side rails designed for stability.

Authentic pieces often show signs of hand-forging, individual casting marks, and weight variations compared to modern reproductions. Look for period-appropriate joinery and naturally aged surface textures beneath any repainted finishes.

An antique iron bed works well as a focal point in both contemporary minimalist and traditional country schemes. Pairing the metallic frame with soft neutral linens and textured throws creates a balanced, inviting bedroom aesthetic.

Maintain the frame by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners. If restoring a piece with surface oxidation, use gentle metal preservatives and rust inhibitors suited to the painted or bare metal finish.
