Fire screens were utilised in nineteenth-century homes to shield the occupants faces from the intense radiant heat of an open fire and to protect unlit hearths during the warmer months.

These pieces were typically constructed from cast or pressed brass frames, frequently incorporating bevelled mirror plates, stained glass, or hand-embroidered panels supported by sturdy scroll legs.

Authentic examples feature period-appropriate metallurgy, hand-finished joints, natural oxidisation patterns, and weight characteristic of solid brass rather than modern plated alloys.

Positioning the piece in front of an unused or decorative fireplace introduces reflective light and metallic texture, contrasting effectively against minimalist or modern interior schemes.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a soft cloth and avoiding abrasive chemical polishes that can strip the historic patina from the brass.
