Description

Dating to the second quarter of the 19th century, this exceptional suzani was probably embroidered in the Uratube region which today falls into modern Tadjikistan. Embroidered in five panels, primarily employing a cross-stitch technique worked in silk on a cotton background, it is densely decorated with flowers and meandering vines in a dynamic arrangement which keeps the eye constantly moving across it. There appear to be two planes to the field design. On one level, pink rosettes are floating in a random fashion linked by green vines, while on a second, lower plane, myriad floral motifs exist. The same theme is continued in the border which lends the entire composition a formal elegance. This piece could work in many settings, but in particular I think it would look magnificent on a wall. The ivory cotton background has survived in generally good condition, while the silk embroidery is mostly intact. There is some minor old restoration to the corners which has been professionally executed.
