FAQs

Iron and brass bedsteads gained immense popularity during the Victorian era following the Industrial Revolution, when mass production techniques allowed for durable, hygienic alternatives to traditional wooden beds.

These beds typically feature tubular iron frames, cast iron joints, and decorative brass or porcelain components, often assembled using wedge-lock mechanisms for stability.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-poured iron joints, traditional threaded fixings or wedge fasteners, period paint finishes or patinated metal surfaces, and non-standard sizing that predates modern mattress dimensions.

An antique iron bedstead adds industrial character and structural lightness to a bedroom, pairing well with neutral linens, minimalist bedside tables, and organic textures to balance the dark metal frame.

Maintenance involves dusting with a soft dry cloth and treating any surface oxidation with neutral wax or specialised metal restorers, avoiding abrasive cleaners that could damage the original finish.
