This Edwardian double bed frame is constructed from iron and brass, finished in a dark blue hand-painted tone with a soft sheen, complemented by a polished brass finish on the top rails and finials. The design incorporates curved dip top rails on both the headboard and footboard, vertical spindle railings, good quality metal castings, and small ceramic castors beneath the legs. The frame measures 145 cm high, 138.5 cm wide, and 202 cm deep overall, and accommodates a UK standard double mattress. Suitable for use as a primary or guest bed in a bedroom, this piece fits naturally into an English country house interior style. The frame supports standard wooden slats or an upholstered bed base to hold a mattress for everyday sleeping use, combining traditional period character with practical modern adaptability for contemporary domestic spaces.

FAQs

Edwardian dip rail beds typically feature a metallic frame with a distinct downwards curve or dip along the top rail of the headboard and footboard. Popular in the early 20th century, these designs combined decorative brass top rails with sturdy iron spindle uprights.

These bed frames were predominantly constructed from cast iron or wrought iron, often combined with solid brass accents such as top rails, knops, and finials. The frames typically incorporate side rails that slot into cast corner joints.

Authentic period pieces feature heavy cast iron joints, threaded brass fittings, and original castors at the base of the legs. They display manufacturing variations and weight consistent with solid metal construction rather than hollow modern tubing.

An Edwardian iron bedstead pairs effectively with neutral linen bedding to highlight its architectural metal framework. Layering textured throws and complementary timber bedside tables balances the crisp metallic lines with warmth.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry, soft cloth and avoid abrasive chemical cleaners on painted or brass surfaces. Brass components can be preserved with a light application of microcrystalline wax to prevent further oxidisation.
