Description

Size: 9ft 6in x 5ft 11in (290 x 180cm).

Antique kilim woven in two parts by the Baluch tribes of Afghanistan.

Circa 1900/20.

This excellent kilim was woven in two parts on a narrow simple loom, and then stitched together in the middle along the entire length; this explains the very slight variation in colour and design from one side to the other. The kilim has a repeat diamond design, the colour palette is warm with earthy tones. Note the long kilim ends decorated with bands of rosette flower heads.

The kilim is in excellent condition with very slight wear, the kilim is suitable for normal domestic use. The is a good strong kilim that will stand up to floor use.

A Baluch kilim is a flat-woven textile produced by nomadic Baluch tribes inhabiting areas across eastern Iran, western Afghanistan, and Pakistan. These kilims feature geometric patterns, dark colour palettes, and are often constructed in narrow strips on portable looms before being joined together.

Baluch kilims were woven using hand-spun sheep wool for both warp and weft, occasionally incorporating goat hair or cotton details. The yarn was dyed using natural botanical and mineral sources, yielding deep blues, terracottas, madder reds, and muted yellow shades.
