An Attractive Late 18th Century Italian Walnut Bench.
Executed throughout in walnut, it has simple square tapering legs joined by an H-form stretcher. The back splats of this piece, however, are anything but simple, featuring beautifully designed and executed overlapping oval motifs which are joined in the centre with fluted bars. The motifs are further enhanced by having moulded edges, giving several levels of relief to the design. The back and arm rests are all treated in the same manner and are also angled, both for the comfort of the sitter and for additional aesthetic appeal. The splats are attached to the seat rails with turned baluster supports.
The bench, with its squab cushion, would be ideal for a hallway or used as a conventional settee. The style is timeless. Although created in the late 18th century neoclassical period, the motifs are remarkably refined and almost contemporary in manner.
