The Tekke were one of the largest of the Turkmen tribes that migrated in Central Asia for centuries. They eventually came to settle on the borders of Persia and Afghanistan at the end of the 19th century, and continued to weave carpets in the nomadic tradition until well into the 20th century. 19th century Tekke carpets continue to appeal both to collectors and to those looking for a decorative carpet. This piece is a very nice example. It has soft wool with a velvety even pile. Finely knotted and in very good condition. The colours are soft and harmonious while the guls in the field are spaced elegantly. Note the main borders with the usual range of geometric ornamentation. The skirts at each end are also well-drawn. Apart from one or two very small old repairs, this lovely carpet has survived in excellent original condition with the original kilim ends and selvages still intact. Professionally cleaned. This is a lovely carpet which would look great in many settings.
