Temple guardian lions, known as shishi or komainu in Japan, traditionally stand guard at the entrances of shrines and temples to ward off evil spirits.

These pieces were typically crafted using the traditional lost-wax casting method, often utilizing a copper alloy commonly referred to in the West as bronze, finished with chemical patination.

Authenticity is generally determined by weight, the depth and quality of the hand-chiselled surface details, natural patination, and occasional maker marks or signatures found on the underside.

Display the object as a focal point on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table, allowing its aged metallic tone to contrast against neutral modern surfaces.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical polishes or abrasive cleaners, which can strip the historic patina.
