FAQs

A housekeepers cabinet, or meuble de portage, is a traditional utilitarian storage unit historically used in French households for linens, dry goods, and domestic supplies.

These cabinets were typically constructed from solid regional hardwoods such as oak, fruitwood, or pine, depending on the area of France in which they were made.

Authenticity is determined by traditional construction methods such as hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged mortise and tenon frames, forged iron hardware, and signs of age-related wear on the timber.

A painted antique cabinet provides a functional focal point in a dining room or hallway, contrasting effectively with minimalist modern decor by adding texture and historical character.

Maintain painted antique furniture by dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoiding chemical cleaners, excessive moisture, and direct sunlight to protect the fragile painted surface.
