This large cast iron heraldic crest plaque dates from the Edwardian period in a Victorian and Gothic revival style, measuring 58 cm by 55 cm. It depicts a central royal shield flanked by a crowned lion supporter on the left and a unicorn supporter on the right, beneath a plumed helmet topped with a small lion finial, all mounted above scrollwork bearing a motto. The entire piece is finished in a solid grey paint colour with textured sculptural relief casting detail throughout the heraldic figures, intricate scrollwork, and crown motifs. It works well as a decorative wall hanging in a home today, positioned above a mantelpiece in a living room, study, or hallway to bring historical character to an interior wall space.

FAQs

Heraldic crest plaques, depicting armorial bearings, were historically created for civic buildings, gates, and stately homes to signify authority and heritage. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, foundry-cast iron versions were widely manufactured as architectural embellishments for residential and commercial structures.

These decorative pieces were produced by pouring molten pig iron into sand moulds formed from carved master patterns. This casting process allowed for detailed high-relief features, including supporters, shields, and mottos, while creating a resilient and heavy structure.

Authentic period castings exhibit crisp detail combined with subtle surface irregularities, mould seams, and evidence of historical oxidisation or paint layers. Original antique pieces are substantially heavier than modern resin reproductions and display genuine weathering on the reverse.

A large cast iron crest serves as a structural focal point when mounted above a mantelpiece, within an entryway, or above a sideboard. The dark, textured metal provides visual contrast against contemporary painted walls, exposed brickwork, or timber panelling.

To care for cast iron, remove surface dust using a stiff bristle brush and dry cloth. Avoid exposure to water to prevent active rusting, and occasionally apply a clear microcrystalline wax to protect the metal and highlight relief details.
