An original etching is a print created by scratching a design into an acid-resistant ground on a metal plate, biting the lines with acid, and inking and pressing the plate onto paper by hand.

Traditional materials include copper or zinc plates, etching needles, oil-based printing inks, and high-rag content or handmade paper.

Authentic etchings typically display a distinct plate mark where the edge of the metal plate pressed into the paper, alongside visible ink texture and paper ageing consistent with the period.

An antique etching can be hung within a traditional gallery wall arrangement or mounted with a neutral conservation-grade mat and a slim timber frame to anchor contemporary living spaces.

Antique paper art should be kept away from direct sunlight, framed using acid-free archival materials, and maintained within stable humidity and temperature conditions to prevent foxing and fading.
