Antique Bessarabian Kilim

19th century
Description

Woven in the late 19th century, this is a truly wonderful Bessarabian kilim with a rare brown/aubergine toned background, the dye changes are subtle and work so well with the design to resemble flowing water.  The muted border with subtle pinks, powder blues and sage greens for the floral patterns create a lovely palette.  A very rare larger size too for a Bessarabian kilim of this age, as usually they smaller and not as long. Condition is perfect and professionally backed too, this is an early and exceptional piece.

An unusual background colour on this kilim, as more often they were woven with blues or green tones.  Woven over 130 years old, and supplied with our sturdy anti-slip underlay, this kilim would look fantastic on the floor for another 100 years.  It would be a pleasure to show this Bessarabian kilim to you at home or at our showroom, please make contact with us in your preferred way to arrange a time.

While most Persian carpets can be classified to a specific region corresponding to their weave, this is not the case with Bessarabian carpets and rugs. With these rugs, the weave only gives clues about the market it was created for (rural or urban); therefore, a normal classification is disregarded and the broader term, "Bessarabian", is applied.

Bessarabian rugs and carpets are the commonly given name for rugs in pile and tapestry technique originating in Ukraine and Moldova during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Some scholars will classify flat-woven carpets as Bessarabian, while referring to knotted-pile carpets as Ukrainian. They are predominantly from an area corresponding to modern Bulgaria and Romania. Produced under late Ottoman rule, they stand right on the cusp of European and Oriental carpet weaving.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bessarabian kilims are traditional flatweave textiles produced in the historical region of Bessarabia, encompassing present-day Moldova and Ukraine, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are renowned for combining regional flatweaving techniques with European floral motifs inspired by French Gobelins tapestries.

These carpets are hand-woven using natural wool yarns on a wool or cotton warp. They employ slit-weave or tapestry flatweave techniques, creating a pileless surface with distinct floral patterns and contrasting geometric or vine borders.

Authentic pieces feature a flat tapestry weave, natural dye tonal variations, and characteristic floral motifs set against dark brown, black, or deep red grounds. The reverse side typically displays identical patterning to the front with visible hand-spun yarn structure.

A floral flatweave rug introduces colour, warmth, and texture when layered over natural seagrass flooring or polished timber floorboards. Its dark central field creates a grounding focal point beneath neutral furniture in living spaces, halls, or bedrooms.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush attachment prevents dust accumulation within the fibres. Spills should be blotted immediately with a dry cloth, and professional hand-washing by a specialist rug restorer is recommended for periodic deep cleaning.
