Antique Timuri or Baluch Small Main Carpet, Western Afghanistan, Circa 1870.

19th century
Description

Size: 7ft 7in x 5ft 1in (230 x 155cm).

Antique Timuri or Baluch main carpet of classic hooked medallion design.

Circa 1870.

A good example of a Timuri main carpet with the traditional Timuri hooked medallion design. The carpet probably originates from the area around Farah or Chakhansur, in Western Afghanistan near the borders with eastern Persia. The carpet is woven in shades of madder red, light and dark indigo blue, olive brown and ivory; the overall colour palette is warm, earthy and soft. The main border is of a classic Timuri design. This is an excellent example of type.

The carpet is in excellent condition with even wear and medium pile, there is some corrosion to the browns as is to be expected.

Stock Number: DS-0556.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Baluch and Timuri carpets are hand-knotted textiles traditionally woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes in eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. They are recognised for their dark, saturated colour palettes and intricate geometric patterns.

These rugs are crafted using natural hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation, occasionally incorporating goat hair or camel wool. Natural plant dyes produce deep indigo blues, rich terracottas, and dark brown shades.

Authentic 19th-century Timuri rugs feature soft wool piles, low wool densities, fully woollen foundations, and deep, dark colour schemes dominated by indigo and madder reds. Geometric medallions and latch-hook motifs are common structural design elements.

A dark-toned tribal carpet functions as an anchoring element in rooms featuring neutral tones, dark wood furniture, or leather seating. Its geometric patterns complement both traditional library settings and contemporary minimal spaces.

Vacuum gently without a rotating brush to protect the delicate hand-spun wool fibres. Professional hand-washing by an antique rug specialist is recommended for deep cleaning, alongside using a quality rug pad to prevent uneven wear.
