Description

Size: 1ft 11in x 1ft 5in (59 x 43cm).

Antique salt-bag by the Kurds of north west Persia.

Circa 1900.

This salt-bag is in piled weave with traditional boteh design often found on Kurdish bags and rugs. The bag is complete with a decorative plain striped plain weave back. Salt-bags were used by the nomads to store and carry rock salt, both for their own use and for their animals; salt was a very valuable item and it therefore deserved to be stored in these beautiful bags which are usually so tightly woven as to be almost waterproof.

The salt bag is in good condition with some wear caused by tribal use.

The bag face has been hand washed and is ready for display.

A namakdan is a utilitarian container traditionally woven by nomadic tribes in Persia, such as the Kurds, to store and transport rock salt for livestock.

These bags are typically constructed using hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation, often featuring a combination of pile-weave and flat-weave kilim techniques with natural dyes.

Authenticity is determined by examining the irregularity of hand-spun wool, natural dye variations, authentic wear patterns, tribal-specific motifs, and traditional construction methods typical of the period.

It can be mounted on linen or framed as a textile art piece, displayed on a wall, or placed on a surface as a sculptural decorative object to add texture and history to a space.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, avoiding excessive moisture, and gently vacuuming with a low-suction attachment protected by mesh screen.
