Description

A rare and stunning pair of mid to third quarter 19th century 'dizlyks' (wedding camel-knee decorations), made by Chowdur Turkmen in the northern steppes of Turkmenistan, around the Mangyshlak peninsula and The Khorezm Oasis. Most dizlyks found these days, and pairs are getting pretty rare, were made by the Yomut Turkmen in the trans-Caspian steppes.

The Chowdur, sometimes spelt 'Chodur', were once a large and important tribe of Oguz origin. In post-Mongol times, the Chowdur came together with the Abdal, Igdyr and several smaller Turkmen clans to form the Chowdur Confederation.

Dizlyks were made specifically by the young Turkmen bride to decorate the knobbly knees of her wedding camel and have a link to the beautiful, large 'asmalyks' which were hung on either flank of the wedding camel and symbolised power and fertility.

Size: 40cm incl. tassels x 30cm wide (16" x 12").
