Description

A very small and fine quality antique George III bow fronted chest of drawers in mahogany. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1790-1810 period.

It is very well made and has lovely, very useful proportions. The mahogany has a gorgeous colour tone and patina, this has brass ring pull handles and sits on splayed bracket feet.

We have had this re-polished, it is in very good condition for its age. There are various small marks and indentations here and there beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

Original period Georgian chests of such small proportions are very rare.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The George III period, spanning from 1760 to 1820, is characterised by classical proportions, refined craftsmanship, and a transition from heavy mahogany designs influenced by Chippendale to lighter, more neoclassical styles associated with Hepplewhite and Sheraton.

Authentic pieces from this era typically utilise solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied to secondary woods such as oak or pine. Construction features hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes and solid timber backs and drawer linings.

Authentication involves examining the drawer construction for hand-cut dovetailing, checking for timber shrinkage and oxidisation consistent with age, inspecting the grain and patina of the wood, and verifying that the hardware matches the period.

This piece can serve as a grounding anchor in a contemporary bedroom or living space, paired with neutral walls and minimalist accessories to highlight the warmth and grain of the historic wood.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking. Apply microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the surface, avoiding silicone-based polishes.
