An Edwardian Freestanding Four Poster Bed

1900 - 1920
Description

A huge Edwardian freestanding chinoiserie lacquered four poster bed, circa 1920. This freestanding bed could go in the centre of a room or against a wall, as it has identical decoration on both front and back of the headboard. This is very unusual and was probably commissioned for the centre of a room.

On the headboard the chinoiserie trellis work decoration is topped with a pagoda and turned finials. The four turned posts are fluted all around and are supported by square decorative posts, with porcelain castors. These posts support the cornice with hidden curtain rails and runners. This in turn supports the wood and canvas tester. On the outside of the tester there is a similar trellis work pattern and eight turned finials with imitation fluting. The inside of the tester is painted with a sky scape of clouds and pink and yellow trailing roses.

The whole bed is lacquered in an off-white and is decorated in various greens. The bed is bolted and screwed together and can be fully dismantled.

This four poster bed will support a king size, super king size or custom made base and mattress.

It has been restored to sound country house condition, minor restoration or conservation could be done if requested.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian four-poster bed, often referred to as a tester bed when featuring an upper canopy frame, dates from the early 20th century. During this era, cabinetmakers frequently referenced classical and exotic historical styles, such as Chinoiserie and Georgian designs, creating lighter and more decorative bedsteads compared to heavier Victorian predecessors.

Edwardian four-poster bedsteads were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or painted pine. They feature traditional joinery including mortise and tenon joints, fluted corner posts, turned finials, and painted or lacquered surface decoration.

Authentic period pieces exhibit evidence of hand-carved details or hand-painted accents, natural aged wear around joint connections, and classical proportions. Look for period-appropriate construction hardware, cast bolt fittings, and original patina on painted or timber surfaces.

A painted four-poster bed acts as a structural anchor in a bedroom. Pair it with crisp neutral bed linens, subtle wall paint palettes, and simple side lighting to allow the architectural form and painted detailing of the frame to remain the visual focal point.

Dust the painted frame regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to avoid scratching the finish. Avoid placing the bedstead in direct sunlight or next to artificial heat sources to prevent timber movement, painted surface cracking, or colour fading.
