The Louis XVI style emerged in France during the late 18th century, marked by a return to classical symmetry, straight lines, and motifs inspired by Greco-Roman architecture, contrasting with the preceding asymmetrical Rococo period.

Authentic period pieces were typically constructed using cast bronze or brass, frequently enhanced with mercury gilding or fire-gilding techniques to achieve a lasting metallic lustre.

Authenticity is determined by examining the weight, chasing detail in the metalwork, casting seams, and the natural patina and oxidisation accumulated on the bronze and gilt surfaces over time.

Pairing a highly decorative metallic fender with a minimalist stone or plain brick fireplace creates a striking focal point that balances traditional craftsmanship with contemporary clean lines.

Gilt bronze should be cleaned strictly with a soft, dry microfiber cloth to remove dust; harsh chemical cleaners, abrasives, and metal polishes must be avoided to prevent stripping the delicate gilt surface.
