Antique Karaja Rug

19th century
Description

An ancient Karaja rug from circa 1890-1900 fine and the region of northern Persia. The border is a rich madder orange/red with lovely rare greens used in the the two eight-pointed star design motifs in the main field.   A central off white latch-hook medallion, surrounded by scattered tribal designs.  In good order with a lower pile this rug does have some minimal wear, but it has a wonderful ancient look and still very useable and durable.  We supply strong anti-slip underlay which aids the rug and prevents wear to antique rugs.

Request a home visit below to arrange a convenient day and time to view this antique Karaja rug in-situ.  We travel all over the UK, from Scotland to London as well as visiting Europe showing our inventory to designers and customers.

Purchase this antique Karaja rug online and we can deliver it to your home, or please organise a visit to our showroom.  We are open Monday to Saturday 9.30-5.30pm by appointment and would love to welcome you here.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karaja (or Karadagh) rugs originate from the Northwest region of Iran, near the Caucasian border. Woven by village weavers, these textiles are celebrated for combining tribal geometric styling with traditional Persian hand-knotting techniques.

Karaja rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton or wool warp and weft foundation. They utilise symmetrical Turkish (Ghiordes) knots, creating a resilient texture with natural dye variations.

Authentic Karaja rugs typically feature a distinctive field design with three central geometric medallions: a central hexagon motif flanked by two stepped eight-pointed star medallions. They display saturated primary colours such as indigo blue, madder red, and ivory.

Place the rug over exposed hardwood flooring or layer it onto neutral natural-fibre carpets like sisal. The deep jewel tones and geometric patterns ground contemporary neutral furniture, dark leather armchairs, or traditional timber pieces.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar to prevent pile damage. Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth, rotate the rug annually for even wear, and use professional hand-washing services for deep cleaning.
